We can all agree a lot of changes to airport security since WTC in 2001 and even more changes are constantly being made. So if you havn't been travelling by plane in the last few years, how about some handy things to know. Especially when travelling with your children there are a few important rules to follow.

All objects, such as strollers, car seats and toys must pass the X ray machine. Plan ahead and fold your stroller and make sure to remove small toys or other items from storage pockets before putting it on the conveyer belt. These items should be put in the plastic bins provided there. Not only does this make it all quicker but also you'll be in control so nothing gets lost. Also to talk with your child/children about this process and make them understand they will get all items back.

Goes without saying - never put your car seat through the metal detector with your kid still in it.

Next, when walking through metal detector, you will probably need to remove your baby from the sling or baby carrier so it can be inspected.

Remember to tell your children to empty their pockets before going through the metal detector, also it helps to tell the kids that the security check point isn't the place for games.

Always make sure your older child go through the metal detector in front of you so that you can keep visual contact with her/him. Always carry small children.

If the detector goes off and you are carrying your child, both you and your kid will be further inspected by security. What will happen is that you will be asked to remove your shoes and of course they may as well scan you and your kid with a wand.

Not even in this situation, your should hand your child to the security guard to hold.

When travelling with a baby or toddler, you are allowed to take breast milk or formula in your carry on bag.

When traveling with more than one child, or if your child has a disability and requires special care - you can request a private security screening.

All in all, certainly a few things to think about, but don't let that scare you - travelling with children sure is possible.
